Become a Local Union Pipefitter

Becoming a union pipefitter has clear benefits and provides you with job safety. To become a part of a union there are several steps you need to take including the following:

• Attain a high school diploma (or determine the prerequisites set by the union you are joining)

• Choose a union and apply to it. Union 539 and 455 are two pipefitter unions located in the St Paul, MN area.

• Apply to an apprenticeship. Through an apprenticeship program, you will be involved in a combination of classroom instruction with on-the-job training. The programs typically last 4-5 years where you will learn and develop skills as well as get paid for your work.

• Certification and training. Complete the training and required classroom lessons including things such as blueprints, pipe systems and equipment, welding, safety procedures, and more.
• Become a Journeyman. After successfully making it through the apprenticeship you will become a journeyman which is a title that signifies that you have the skills and experience to work independently
