University of Minnesota Recreation and Wellness Center

U of M Recreation and Wellness Center

Project Details:

Location: Minneapolis, MN

Owner: University of Minnesota

The facility consisted of a 155,000 square foot addition to the existing Recreation Center. The expansion provides four tiered levels of state-of-the-art cardiovascular and strength training equipment, a lower level strength center, and several additional cardiovascular and stretching spaces, bringing the total fitness space available on the Minneapolis campus to more than 25,000 square feet. MMC installed four air handling units that put out 135,000 CFM of air to heat and cool the building.

These air handling units are fed by the university’s district steam and chilled water. The locker rooms feature an air heat recovery unit that uses exhaust air to warm/cool incoming outside air. The second floor of the building features in-floor heating for supplement heat. Other mechanical systems installed were VAV with reheat boxes, VFD’s on supply and return fans and VFD’s on the main system pumps.
